Our Full Review

The Thumbusters is a soft, stretchy and colorful one-thumbed glove. The thumb buster design is simple in that it covers just the thumb and leaves the other fingers free. It is easily put on, and easily taken off. The variety of bright colors and comfortable fabric means that children are often willing to wear the thumb glove without much fuss. It comes in a shimmery blue, bright pink for girls, and neon-like green. It is machine washable too. The manufacturer recommends it for ages 4-12, based on size. This product is not a baby thumb sucking deterrent, and also not intended for adult thumb sucking.

The biggest drawback of the thumb buster is how easily it is taken off. Because it is so easily removed by your child, it is a “helper” and not a “stopper.” If your child is highly motivated to quit, and is primarily a thumbsucker during waking hours, then this product could be a good choice for you. For example, if your child does not suck her thumb while sleeping, but does while watching TV in the evening or while relaxing with Saturday morning cartoons, then the soft fabric may be enough to remind her to stop.

However, many children are stubborn and have what seems like an addiction to sucking their thumb because of the engrained comfort it gives them. There has been a lot of feedback from parents who say their child did not remove it, but just sucked right over the fabric. This can happen at nighttime particularly for children who have a subconscious habit of thumb sucking.

The alternative is having your pediatric dentist installing an appliance into your child’s mouth, and then following up with expensive and time consuming braces. Or, simply allowing your child’s teeth to get bent out of shape. This is bad for their confidence and can have a negative psychological impact during their key developmental years.

MOTIVATION IS KEY. This is a concept you will find repeated throughout this website. If your child is not motivated to quit, and you as the parent are not motivated to encourage and reward your child, even develop a program with your child, then there really isn’t any product that will work. As with any life change, breaking a habit is difficult. Especially the thumb sucking habit. The most popular question is how to stop thumb sucking, and the answer is twofold. First, buy the right device for your child that you and them can rely on either as a reminder, or as strong reinforcement; and secondly, create a program with rewards and motivate your child. When you buy a Thumb Buster you get a free calendar and stickers included, so that you and your child can track progress and see results.

If you decide to buy the Thumbusters direct from the manufacturer, and you purchase two, then free shipping is included. Otherwise, Amazon is a great resource.

Here are some select review quotes about Thumbuster at Amazon.com, which gives an average three out of five star rating:

“My 7 year old has had such a hard time breaking the habit. We’ve tried the nail polishes and expensive thumb guards. The nail polish is really for nail biting because it doesn’t work at night, and the thumb guard worked for a while but it wasn’t comfortable enough for her to keep on. We’ve had Thumbusters thumb guard for about six weeks now and she has not reverted. I like Thumbusters because it’s easy to wash and quick to put on and off. She wore them 24/7 for the first 4 weeks and now only wears it in the evenings. The spandex material pilling now but the thumb buster still works so I’m happy with the purchase and she is proud of herself for stopping thumb sucking. Be advised though, this product will only be effective if your child wants to stop because it is so easily removed.” – four star review

“These Thumbusters are made of stretchable fabric with Velcro that attaches both sides at the wrist. Once your child tries to take it off, the Velcro gets stuck on the fabric and you have to gently try to pull them apart. Even an adult can’t avoid the Velcro getting stuck on the fabric why taking the thumbuster off the child’s hand. You end up with is a fuzzy looking Thumbbuster after about one day’s use. If you are serious about stopping thumb sucking then buy a more robust product.” – one star review

In summary, if you are looking for a nice product that will act a reminder then the Thumb Buster may be a good choice for you. However, if your child has a problem with sucking thumb at night, or is stubborn and really does it a lot, then you should look for a more robust product. OUR FINAL CONCLUSION

  • Thumbusters is not recommended for children who have a hard time quitting thumb sucking, but if your child just needs a reminder and you have a tight budget then this may be for you.
  • Inexpensive, colorful, comfortable and washable.
  • Kids suck through it, collects slobber and germs, and the material falls apart quickly.

  1. I tried, unsuccessfully, the Thumb busters product. Great design, great idea, but no chance of working because it comes right off. As any parent knows, a kid who needs the comfort of sucking their thumb… NEEDS IT… and a little fabric won’t stop them. After trying the thumb buster I found this website, now going to try something else.

  2. The thumbuster thumb guard worked grear for my eight year old girl. She was highly motivated and just needed a little reminder. I found this site after going online to find the best price so I could buy another, and felt like sharing :). I like the thumb glove concept. It is simple. But you child must be motivated, otherwise they will just take it off. Remember, thumb sucking is at its worst at night.

  3. Thanks for this website! I’m here because I tried this THUMB BUSTER, it did not work after the first day on my three year old because she took it off, and now I’m going to try the NIPIT. Wish me luck!

  4. These work great but your child really has to want to quit and just use this as a little reminder. Overall I think the product is not great when you consider how many need to be purchased and then repurchased because the product is not super durable. The velcro starts to fray after a couple washes. Also they were a bit small for my daughters hand.. Also, beware, only one comes in a pack so if you have a child that sucks both thumbs, you will need to buy at least 2, probably 4 so you have a back up pair.. They tend to get lost easily. I like the alternative products seen here on this website.

  5. Appreciating the commitment you put into your site and in depth information you offer.
It’s nice to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same outdated rehashed material.
Fantastic read! I’ve saved your site and I’m including your RSS feeds to my Google account.
